Located on an upper level of Ely Cathedral, The Stained Glass Museum is something of a hidden gem. The only museum dedicated to stained glass in the UK, its collections span over 800 years. The museum has a particularly fine collection of 19th and 20th century British stained glass. In this illustrated talk the Curator of The Stained Glass Museum will discuss some of the Pre-Raphaelite and Arts and Crafts windows in the museum’s collection, revealing their origins and the influence of these artistic movements upon the unique art of stained glass. Dr Jasmine Allen is Director and Curator of The Stained Glass Museum, Ely, the only museum dedicated to the art of stained glass in the UK. She is author of a recent monograph entitled Windows for the world: nineteenth-century stained glass and the International Exhibitions, c.1851-1900 (Manchester University Press, 2018), and is currently co-editing a special issue on 19th century stained glass for the interdisciplinary journal 19. Jasmine is also a board member of the Glaziers Trust, the charitable arm of the Worshipful Company of Glaziers and an advisor to the London Stained Glass Repository. |

In this talk Dr Laura MacCulloch, Curator at Royal Holloway, University of London, explores the largest collection of drawings by Ford Madox Brown held at Birmingham Museums and Art Gallery. Using these drawings she will look at Brown’s early artistic influences and follow his journey as an artist through to his mature style. Through these works she will reveal what made his art and ideas so appealing to the young men who went on to form the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood and how he, although not a formal member of the group, worked alongside them to create Pre-Raphaelite masterpieces. |
