This lecture is based around Elizabeth Siddall and the painting 'Ophelia' by John Everett Millais
A new look at one of the most famous Pre-Raphaelite myths and artistic legends; the story of "the body in the bath". I re-examine the story in which the model, Elizabeth Siddal, reclined in a portable tub of cooling water through the re-examination of Millais' drawings and insights from history of dress and sports science.
Deborah Cherry is Professor Emerita of Art History at Central St. Martins. She has published on nineteenth-century art and on contemporary art, including 'Art into Life: Essays on Tracy Emin', co-edited with Alexandra Kokoli (Bloomsbury, 2020).
