THIS IS AN IN-PERSON LECTURE.
Despite receiving no formal art education Burne-Jones is one of the most brilliant, inventive and sophisticated draughtsman associated with the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood. From tentative beginnings in the 1850s illustrating scenes from Maclaren's Fairy Family to the production of hundreds of cartoons for stained-glass windows all over the world (mostly for Morris & Co), his output is enormously varied. Yet, within this vast oeuvre can be distilled the dual essential character of form and function, closely following what and why any drawing was made. Towards the end of his life his drawings were held in high acclaim being reproduced in magazines, widely exhibited, and avidly collected. He also donated them, himself, to art museums, such as Musee du Luxembourg (later the Musee d'Orsay) in Paris.
